Francesco De Paola attained in 2002 his PhD in Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II. He is Associate Professor of Hydraulic Constructions at the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (DICEA) of the University of Naples Federico II since September 2018. During the last 15 years, his attention has been mainly drawn to the civil and environmental technology fields. He is qualified for Full Professorship from 15 July 2020. Specifically, his main research fields regard water management, hydrogeological risk mitigation, climate change analysis, storm-water control measures (in terms of quality improvement and quantity reduction), integrated river basin management, water systems optimization. Prof. De Paola has authored/co-authored more than 80 articles indexed. He has been involved in multi-disciplinary national and international research projects, working on the implementation of sustainable and engineering activities at case study sites. He took part in the EU FP7 project, CLUVA (CLimate change and Urban Vulnerability in Africa), focused on the development of participative methodologies, in collaboration with involved policy makers and stakeholders, to manage multiple issues related to climate change (including floods, droughts and desertification) affecting some African cities. He also took part to the METROPOLIS project (PON), which aims at both defining methodologies and developing innovative and sustainable technologies for the assessment and management of natural and man-made hazards in the urban environment, by addressing mitigation strategies based upon an integrated Decision Support System. Jan Baeyens studied Nuclear Engineering (Brussels-Belgium) and Chemical Engineering (Leuven-Belgium). He obtained his Ph.D. in 1974 at the Postgraduate School of Powder Technology (Bradford-U.K.). After his military service and 13 years of employment (1975- 1988) in engineering divisions of various Belgian companies, he became a part-time professor at the University of Leuven (B) and worked as a process and project consultant in Europe and overseas. He joined the University of Antwerpen (B) in 2003 as a full-time professor, responsible for teaching and research in the fields of environmental, powder and process technology. Between 2005 and 2012, he was a Chair holder of the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering (Chair of Integrated Process Development) at the University of Birmingham (U.K.) and at the University of Warwick (U.K.), where he lectured on process design, sustainable development and renewable energy. He moreover co-ordinated research in the above fields. Since October 2010, he became Visiting Professor at the Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) and Principal Investigator of the Beijing Advanced Innovation Centre for Soft Matter Science and Engineering (also BUCT), where he is actively involved in the life science/technology and renewable energy research. He continues to co-supervise PhD and Masters' research at the University of Leuven and at BUCT. Despite his late academic start, he has contributed to over 286 publications in international journals, is author/editor of 14 books and a regular speaker at international congresses.

Dr. Manlio Michieletto is an Architecture & Urban Design Department associate professor. He holds a Master of Architecture and a PhD in Architectural Composition from the IUAV University of Venice. He has had several teaching and research positions in different institutions in Europe and Africa. After being an Associate Professor in DR Congo, he was Dean of the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Rwanda. In 2011, he launched his practice of designing and realising projects in Italy, Burkina Faso, DR Congo, and Rwanda. His research focuses on satellite city development, architectural heritage and tropical architecture. Dr. Michieletto is supervising doctoral theses that focus on modern and adaptive architecture.

Professor Mikayel G. Melkumyan, born June 10, 1951, is a distinguished Armenian engineer and academic specializing in earthquake-resistant construction. After graduating from the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in 1973, he began researching reinforced concrete structures' behavior under seismic conditions. In 1983, he led the Earthquake Resistant Construction Department at the Armenian Scientific-Research Institute. Following the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake, Melkumyan focused on analyzing structural failures and developing innovative seismic isolation techniques. His research at the University of Tokyo resulted in the Melkumyan Hysteresis Model, enhancing the understanding of shear behavior in structures. From 1992 to 1996, he taught at the American University of Armenia and directed the Earthquake Engineering Center. He pioneered methods for retrofitting buildings with base isolation while keeping them operational. His patented technologies have been implemented in seismic isolation designs for construction of new and retrofitting of existing buildings in Armenia, Russia, Romania, Peru, Kazakhstan, and Turkey. Melkumyan has authored 260 scientific works, including 21 books (6 monographs), and contributed to the Earthquake Resistant Construction Code and the Seismic Isolation Standards in Armenia. He is the president of the Armenian Association for Earthquake Engineering and has served on various international committees. His efforts have significantly advanced seismic engineering, positioning Armenia among the leaders in this vital field.

Dr Pilar Maria Guerrieri holds a PhD with honours in ‘Architectural Composition’ from Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage in Delhi and Westminster University in London. She is an Architectural Historian, particularly interested in re-reading pregnant contemporary issues from a historical perspective to give them a new light and a wider understanding. She has been extensively studying the development of megacitiesand the effects of cultural exchanges, exploring the meaning of terms such as ‘tradition’, ‘identity’ and ‘heritage’, and she is now interested in the relationship between city, environment and human well-being. Pilar since she finished her PhD is teaching. She has been teaching ‘History and Theory of Architecture and Human Settlements’ in Delhi at the Italian-Indian GD Goenka University, branch of Politecnico di Milano in India, and she is now teaching ‘History of Architecture and Urban Planning’, at Politecnico di Milano (DASTU) in Italy. She has been published in several international journals, participated at national and international conferences. She is the author of the book Maps of Delhi (Niyogi, 2017) and Negotiating Cultures: Delhi’s Architecture and Planning from 1912 to 1962 (Oxford University Press, 2018), Architettura di Egizio Nichelli (1937-1991), (Franco Angeli, 2022), Post Western Histories of Architecture, with Marco Biraghi, (Routledge, 2023).

Esraa Daoud is chartered geotechnical engineer and PhD student having over 17 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering and design across Middle East. My experience covers the engineering aspects starts from scoping of work, ground specification and site supervision of ground investigation, ground improvement and pile testing, geotechnical interpretation and determination of geotechnical design parameters, design management of causeways foundations, roads, retaining walls and geotechnical design of major structures such as commercial, retail, high-rise building, rail and highways projects, design of shallow and deep foundations, enabling works and piling contracts for various construction schemes in United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, KSA, UK and Qatar. Dr. Khair Al-Deen Bsisu is a distinguished civil engineer and academic with over 30 years of experience in structural engineering, teaching, and consulting. In 2006, Prof. Dyah Erny Herwindiati completed her doctoral program focusing on Robust Statistics at the Mathematics Department of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), one of Indonesia's leading educational institutions. Since earning her doctorate, she has been at the forefront of developing innovative, robust algorithms specifically designed for image processing applications, which have enhanced the accuracy and reliability of data analysis in various fields.
